The late Nigerian gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu’s husband, Peter Nwachukwu, was found guilty of her death and sentenced to death by hanging by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Wuse Zone 2.
Justice Nwosu-Iheme issued the court’s decision on Monday, imposing the sentence after finding the defendant guilty after concluding that the prosecution had met the legal burden of proof.
The late Osianachi and his spouse Reginald Nwali, Nwachukwu’s attorney, begged for leniency prior to sentencing, while Mrs. Aderonke Imala, the prosecutor, implored the court to uphold the law.
Justice Nwosu-Iheme sentences Nwachukwu to death by hanging on Count 1. For other charges, he received varying sentences, including two years imprisonment on several counts, six months on one count and a fine of N500,000 and N200,000 on others.
Refreshing your memory, Kemi Filani reported in April 2022 that the gospel singer passed away after allegedly being beaten by her husband.
While some reports claimed she died from cancer, testimonies from family, church members and neighbours revealed that she was a victim of domestic violence.
This led to Nwachukwu’s arrest and he was arraigned on June 3rd, 2022, by the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation (OAGF), representing the Federal Government.
He faced a 23-count charge, including culpable homicide (punishable by death), criminal intimidation, cruelty to children, spousal battery, and other offenses.
