Members of the former Nigerian president Muhammadu Buhari’s inner circle have officially announced his mortality.
His longstanding spokesperson, Garba Shehu, and his former aide, Bashir Ahmad, issued statements on Sunday informing the public of the news. He wrote in a succinct message that Shehu shared:
The former president Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, passed away this afternoon in a London clinic, according to the former president’s family. Amin, may Allah welcome him in Aljannatul Firdaus.
According to insiders, Buhari had been receiving medical care in the UK in recent weeks, however the cause of his death has not been made public.
Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2015 to 2023, was a retired Major General and previously led the country as military head of state between 1983 and 1985. His legacy spans decades of influence in both military and civilian governance.
Tributes are already pouring in from political leaders, dignitaries, and citizens across the country and beyond, as the nation mourns the loss of one of its most prominent post-independence figures.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.
