Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, an award-winning Nigerian author, has expressed her profound concern about the worsening circumstances in her country and the hard realities that ordinary Nigerians must endure.
In a recent interview, she emphasized that the everyday challenges of regular Nigerians, many of whom are barely surviving, are what bother her the most, not economic metrics or statistics. Adichie stressed that even for those who were formerly a part of the safe middle class, life has become excruciatingly unpleasant.
She explained how many who once had steady jobs, could afford to buy food stress-free, or pay for school fees are now struggling with growing expenses, a deteriorating standard of living, and future uncertainty.
“I can see it in how people who were formerly securely middle class—and not that life was rosy for them, but they got by—are now people who beg and who are in need. That worries me greatly,” she said.
