The Chief Executive Officer of the South African Football Association, SAFA, Lydia Monyepao, has confirmed that FIFA has initiated an investigation into the Teboho Mokoena suspension saga and has been in contact with them.
The world football governing body has issued a letter to Bafana Bafana, requiring an explanation regarding Mokoena’s eligibility for the match against Lesotho in March this year.
The midfielder was ineligible to participate in the 2026 World Cup qualifier, having incurred two yellow cards.
The FIFA investigation may result in South Africa’s 2-0 victory being overturned, converted into a 3-0 defeat.
“We have been informed by FIFA about the investigation into the Lesotho match, specifically Teboho Mokoena’s participation.
We received this information yesterday,” Monyepao stated via Idiski Times.
“We are currently preparing our response to the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, as required by the association…”
Nigeria sits in third place in Group C with 11 points and two matches remaining, trailing South Africa’s 17 points and Benin Republic’s 14 points.
Both Benin and Nigeria await FIFA’s decision with bated breath.
