In an effort to reestablish its constitutional authority, the Lagos State House of Assembly has instructed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to direct the Head of Service, Bode Agoro, to revoke the appointment letters of several agency heads who commenced their roles without obtaining legislative confirmation.
The directive was issued during a plenary session where lawmakers articulated their discontent over the executive’s persistent failure to adhere to due process.
The Assembly has directed the State Accountant General to immediately terminate the payment of salaries and allowances to the affected appointees.
Also, the Head of Service has been summoned to appear before the House to provide an explanation for permitting these individuals to assume their duties without securing the necessary statutory approval. Speaker Dr.
Mudashiru Obasa has described this issue as a recurring problem that demonstrates a lack of regard for the legislative arm of government.
It is imperative that the Head of Service ceases to disregard the directive of the House of Assembly.
The House allocates funds to these agencies, yet their heads display a lack of respect towards the Assembly, he stated.
The lawmakers contended that circumventing the confirmation process erodes the principle of separation of powers.
They cited Sections 126 and 198 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which stipulate that the legislature must confirm certain public officers appointed by the executive.
The House’s resolution serves as a firm reminder that all branches of government must adhere to the rule of law and respect established checks and balances.
