Nigeria wedding bus crash claims lives of 19 women and children

In northern Nigeria, a bus involved in wedding celebrations fell into a river, killing at least 19 women and children among the passengers, as reported by a union official and residents on Sunday.

On Saturday evening, the driver stopped the bus on a bridge that had partially collapsed, but it rolled back into the river, according to Abubakar Muhammed, an official with the NURTW transport operators union, who spoke with AFP.

The official reported that the bus, traveling in a wedding convoy to escort a bride to her new husband’s house, crashed near Fass village in Zamfara state, with the driver possibly forgetting to apply the hand brake.

The bus had been travelling to Jega in the neighbouring state of Kebbi. Residents of Fass confirmed the number of women and children killed.

Nigeria’s poorly maintained roads are prone to frequent traffic accidents, with 9570 incidents recorded last year resulting in 5421 fatalities, according to federal road safety statistics.
