The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress is extending an invitation to the suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara to join its ranks as the state prepares for a handover ceremony.
APC spokesman in Rivers, Darlington Nwauju, made the call on Tuesday while speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief.
Nwauju remarked, “If I were the governor of Rivers State, on my return on Thursday, I would announce my decision to defect to the All Progressives Congress.
In my opinion, the governor should join the APC, and we would gladly accept the governor into our party.”
Nwauju was asked if Fubara would lead the APC in Rivers in the event of his defection, to which he responded that it was inevitable.
“Our party’s convention dictates that upon joining the All Progressives Congress, he would become the leader,” he noted.
Nwauju also reflected on the tenure of Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (retd.), who has administered the state for the past six months.
To date, the APC has not formally requested that Ibas provide an account of his stewardship for the past six months.
“The budget approval he obtained was from the National Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
There is a committee from the House of Representatives overseeing the emergency period.
“I expect the committee to conduct due diligence, submit a report, and inform Nigerians of their findings. This is one of their primary responsibilities in the legislative process,” he stated.
Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu and Fubara are expected to return to the country on Tuesday, ahead of Thursday’s transition to democratic rule in Rivers State.
Tinubu has truncated his vacation in France and will return to Abuja, while Fubara is expected back from London.
Their arrival comes as the state administrator intensifies preparations for Thursday’s handover, marking the end of emergency rule in Rivers.
Tinubu had departed Nigeria on September 4 for his annual holiday in France and the UK, initially scheduled to last until September 10, but concluded his trip ahead of schedule.
