The Federal Government defended the increased Nigerian passport fees of N100,000 and N200,000 on Thursday, stating that the adjustment is necessary to sustain quality, combat corruption, and ensure the timely issuance of travel documents. The Nigeria Immigration Service, in a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, ACI AS Akinlabi, announced that from September 1, 2025, applications made within Nigeria will attract new fees of N100,000 for the 32-page, five-year validity passport and N200,000 for the 64-page, 10-year validity passport.
In a bid to enhance the passport application process, the Nigerian government has introduced a new fee structure for passport applications made within the country. As of now, the 32-page, five-year passport will cost N100,000, while the 64-page, 10-year passport.
will be priced at N200,000. However, Nigerians residing abroad will continue to pay $150 and $230 for the 32-page and 64-page passports, respectively. This adjustment aims to streamline the issuance process while maintaining the integrity of the document. Following the earlier adjustment in August 2024, which raised the cost of passports from N35,000 to N50,000 for the 32-page booklet and from N70,000 to N100,000 for the 64-page booklet, the government has taken another step towards improving the passport application process. Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, emphasized that the new fee structure will facilitate timely delivery of passports, eliminate corruption, and ensure that Nigerians receive their passports within one week of enrollment. The minister stated that the new system is designed to eradicate long delays and extortion, which previously led to citizens waiting up to seven months or paying as much as N200,000 to expedite processing. By implementing these changes, the government aims to provide a more efficient and transparent passport application process for Nigerians.
