The Super Eagles are set to face a crucial encounter against Benin Republic on Tuesday in Uyo, as the competition for the 2026 FIFA World Cup intensifies, with Nigeria requiring a win and favourable results from other matches to maintain their qualification hopes.
The Super Eagles enhanced their qualification prospects on Friday with a hard-won 2-1 victory over Lesotho, a result that keeps them in contention heading into the decisive final round of fixtures.
In the 55th minute, William Troost-Ekong converted a penalty kick to open the scoring after a handball was committed in the Lesotho box, and Akor Adams doubled the lead in the 80th minute with a composed finish, but Kalake pulled one back for the hosts three minutes later.
In other developments, Benin Republic defeated Rwanda 1-0, and South Africa was held to a goalless draw by Zimbabwe.
As a result, Nigeria is in third place with 14 points, trailing Benin Republic with 17 points and South Africa with 15 points.
With only one game left, Nigeria’s qualification hopes are uncertain, but two pathways remain.
Although the Super Eagles’ fate is not entirely in their control, qualification is still possible. To start, Nigeria must secure a win against Benin Republic: a victory in Uyo is imperative for the Eagles to have any chance of securing a World Cup spot.
How Nigeria can qualify
Nigeria’s qualification hopes also depend on South Africa dropping points in their final fixtures.
A draw between South Africa and Rwanda would particularly favour the Super Eagles if they defeat Benin Republic by a two- or more-goal margin.
Opponents’ Watch South Africa will host Rwanda at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit in a game Nigeria will closely monitor, while Lesotho’s clash with Zimbabwe will have no bearing on qualification, as both nations are already out of contention.
