Nigerians in the United States have set aside religious, ethnic, and regional differences to demonstrate unity and solidarity with their homeland following Nigeria’s recent designation as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC) by the United States.
The show of unity took place on Saturday at the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Washington, DC, where Nigerians from diverse backgrounds gathered in colourful traditional attire to celebrate the 2025 Nigeria Day.
Speaking at the event, Nigeria’s Ambassador to the United States, Amb. Samson Itegboje, emphasised that despite the challenges facing the country, Nigerians remain bound by a shared commitment to peace, coexistence, and national development.
“Across religious, ethnic, and regional lines, Nigerians continue to work together to build a more secure, prosperous, and inclusive country,” Itegboje said.
CPC Designation Seen as Opportunity for Deeper Engagement
Addressing concerns surrounding Nigeria’s CPC designation, the envoy said the Federal Government views the development as an opportunity to strengthen dialogue and cooperation with the United States rather than a point of isolation.
“The Government of Nigeria recognises the seriousness of the CPC designation and welcomes sustained engagement and dialogue with the United States,” he said.
“Nigeria firmly believes that complex security and humanitarian challenges are best addressed through partnership rather than isolation. We remain committed to protecting all citizens, regardless of faith or background, while strengthening accountability, early-warning mechanisms, and coordinated responses to insecurity.”
Nigeria’s Regional Security Role Highlighted
Itegboje also highlighted Nigeria’s leadership role in promoting democracy and security across West Africa and the Sahel, citing Nigeria’s intervention to thwart a recent coup attempt in the Republic of Benin.
“It was Nigeria, following a call for assistance by the government of Benin, that immediately deployed troops to forestall that coup attempt,” he said.
“This demonstrates Nigeria’s capacity to act as a stabilising force in the region. The United States needs to continue partnering with Nigeria to stabilise the sub-region and combat terrorism and undemocratic governance.”
Call for Stronger Nigeria–U.S. Partnership
The ambassador expressed appreciation to the U.S. Government, members of Congress, diplomatic partners, and friends of Nigeria for their continued engagement and support.
“When the most powerful country in the world, which is also a bastion of democracy, partners with the largest democracy in Africa, transformative outcomes are inevitable,” he noted.
“We look forward to deepening our partnership in a spirit of mutual respect, shared responsibility, and constructive collaboration.”
Pride in Nigerian-American Contributions
Itegboje also praised the achievements of Nigerian-Americans, noting their leadership roles in medicine, technology, business, academia, public service, and the arts. He said their contributions continue to strengthen both Nigeria and the United States.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the event attracted Nigerians from all walks of life, diplomats, and friends of Nigeria. Several attendees commended Nigerians’ global achievements and expressed optimism that with purposeful leadership, Nigeria would realise its vast potential.
