Nigeria’s Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, has announced his retirement from international football—just days before the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The decision marks the end of a decade-long journey with the national team.
Troost-Ekong, who made his debut for Nigeria in 2015, earned 83 caps and scored 8 goals. Over the years, he featured in several AFCON tournaments, represented the country at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, and helped secure a bronze medal at the 2016 Olympic Games.
In his farewell message, Troost-Ekong described playing for Nigeria as a “tremendous honor.” He expressed deep gratitude to his coaches, teammates, fans, and everyone who supported his journey. As captain, he said he took immense pride in leading the team and giving everything on the pitch.
The defender also pledged to continue contributing to the nation through his foundation, ensuring his impact extends beyond football.
Troost-Ekong’s legacy includes being named the Best Player at AFCON 2023, one of the standout achievements of his international career.
