Super Eagles attacker, Victor Osimhen, has faced criticism at his club base in Turkey amid allegations that he intentionally engineered a suspension ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, tournament.
Osimhen is expected to reunite with his colleagues in the Nigeria squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in the near future.
Leading up to Saturday’s Super Lig game against Antalyaspor, the Nigerian was navigating a disciplinary tightrope having already received bookings against Beşiktaş, Kocaelispor and Fenerbahçe.
The yellow card Osimhen received in the 85th minute against Antalyaspor on Saturday has resulted in a one-match ban for the Super Eagles’ prolific striker.
Consequently, Osimhen will be unavailable for the upcoming match against Kasımpaşa next weekend, and having been named in the Super Eagles’ 28-man squad for the AFCON, he will serve the ban during the international tournament.
According to Turkish outlet Gazete Gerçek, Osimhen could be referred to the Turkish Football Federation Disciplinary Committee, PFDK, for additional investigation.
The disciplinary code’s Article 37 covers instances where players allegedly “deliberately receive a yellow card”.
Should Osimhen be found guilty under Article 37 of the PFDK, a two-game suspension may be imposed.
Osimhen may be absent from matches against İstanbul Başakşehir, Kasımpaşa, Fethiyespor, Trabzonspor, and Gaziantep FK if the Super Eagles advance to the final.
