The Ogun State Police Command has begun an investigation into the arrest of Afrobeats artist Habeeb Okikiola, also known as Portable, after a viral video surfaced showing the singer allegedly being assaulted while in police custody.
The video, which went viral on social media platforms, especially X, depicts the Zazu crooner in handcuffs, shirtless, and tearfully pleading while seated on a couch in what appears to be a police holding area.
Unsubstantiated reports suggest that Portable was beaten by some police personnel at a detention facility in Ogun State, prompting public outrage and renewed concerns over police conduct and human rights practices.
Responding to the video, Police Public Relations Officer DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi verified to Vanguard that Portable remains in custody and disapproved of the alleged assault. “I will provide an advance notice before my official statement is released.”
DSP Babaseyi confirmed that the individual was taken into custody and is currently being held, but noted that this is a separate issue.
The assault that occurred at the station is the primary concern, he emphasized, and such behavior is unacceptable.
He also stressed that filming or publicly displaying suspects is not permitted, as it poses a risk to both the safety of the suspects and the integrity of the investigation.
“We have a strict policy against video recording suspects, and we also refrain from releasing images of their faces.
This policy applies to all suspects, regardless of their identity,” he stated.
DSP Babaseyi announced that the command has commenced an internal investigation and assured that any officer found culpable would face disciplinary action under the law.
“The investigation is ongoing, and the officers involved, if found culpable, will be forwarded to the relevant authorities. That process has already commenced,” he stated.
A report has revealed that Portable’s arrest was prompted by a complaint filed by actress and skit maker Omobolarinde Akinyanju, known as Ashabi Simple, at a police station in Ogun State.
Ashabi Simple, who is one of Portable’s baby mamas and the mother of one of his children, accused Portable of physical assault, seizing her phones, and threatening her and her siblings with an axe.
The alleged incident occurred on January 1, 2026, at Portable’s bar in Ogun State, which Ashabi visited at the singer’s invitation.
Reports indicate that a heated argument arose over Ashabi’s status in Portable’s life, with Ashabi seeking recognition as a wife rather than a baby mama, while Portable maintained that only his legally married wife, Bewaji, holds that title.
Portable addressed the allegations in a lengthy Instagram video, expressing anger over Ashabi’s lawsuit and accusing her of infidelity.
