Tragedy struck at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, as a 400-level medical student, Adewole Emmanuel, passed away after suddenly collapsing shortly before his final session examination.
The heartbreaking incident occurred while students were gathered and awaiting the commencement of their exams at the university’s College of Health Sciences.
The death was officially confirmed in a statement released by the Ife University Medical Students Association (IFUMSA), which expressed profound grief over the loss of one of its members.
In its statement, the association described Emmanuel as a valued and vibrant individual within the academic community:
“Under the cover of dark clouds, we write to you with the heaviest of hearts to inform you of the passing of one of our own, an integral part of the association and a solid pillar of his class.”
He was further remembered as a dedicated student and a cherished friend:
“A colleague, friend, roommate, and a Part 4 medical student with an undeniably bright future until the time of his passing.”
The association emphasized the emotional weight of the loss, noting that Emmanuel’s death represents the passing of a promising future and a deeply loved member of the IFUMSA community. It also appealed to the public to avoid speculation and respect the family’s privacy during this difficult time.
According to a senior member of the association who spoke anonymously, Emmanuel had not shown any prior signs of illness before the incident.
“He hadn’t been sick. He just collapsed and couldn’t be resuscitated,” the source said.
“We were about to write our final exam. While waiting, he suddenly collapsed in the college.”
The sudden nature of the incident has left fellow students and faculty in shock, casting a somber mood over the academic environment.
University authorities and the student body have since reached out to the deceased’s family, while the campus community continues to mourn the loss of a young life cut tragically short at a crucial moment in his academic journey.
