May 1, 2026 — Russia carried out its biggest daytime drone assault of the war, launching 409 drones across Ukraine between 8:00 AM and 3:30 PM local time.
What Happened
- 409 drones launched from multiple directions in Russia and occupied territories
- Approximately 250 were Shahed-type (Iranian-designed) UAVs
- Ukrainian air defenses shot down 388 of them

Ternopil — Hit Hardest
The western city of Ternopil, just 130 km (80 miles) from the Polish border, took the worst strikes:
- 50+ Shahed drones targeted the city
- Over 20 explosions recorded across Ternopil
- At least 12 people injured, 6 hospitalized
- Industrial sites and infrastructure were damaged
- Parts of the city lost electricity — power was restored later
- Thick black smoke billowed near the main train station
- Public transport was temporarily suspended
- 39 people evacuated from affected areas
Ukraine’s Response
Ukrainian air defenses intercepted 388 of 409 drones. President Zelensky condemned the attack, calling it a deliberate escalation. Ukraine also struck back, hitting Russia’s Tuapse oil refinery for the 4th time in two weeks.
Broader Context
This daytime attack came on top of a massive overnight assault that included 1 Iskander-M ballistic missile and 210 additional drones (190 intercepted). Over 600 drones were launched in a 24-hour period.
Analysts note: Russia previously launched drones almost exclusively at night. The shift to daytime attacks is a deliberate tactic designed to inflict more damage and exhaust Ukrainian air defenses.
