Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka has announced the revocation of his United States visa.
On Tuesday, Professor Soyinka announced this development during a meeting with journalists at Kongi’s Harvest Gallery, Freedom Park, Lagos Island.
The Nobel Laureate indicated that the US consulate informed him of the revocation through a letter dated October 23rd, 2025.
“It is essential that I convene this conference to notify individuals in the United States who are expecting my attendance at various events, thus preventing them from wasting their time. I have had my visa revoked and am now prohibited from entering the United States.
For those wishing to meet with me, my location is well-known,” he remarked. He conveyed surprise and confusion regarding the decision, highlighting his ignorance of any wrongdoing that may have led to the revocation.
He believes that the action is connected to his criticism of US President Donald Trump and his policies.
Professor Soyinka had previously destroyed his US green card in protest after President Trump’s 2016 election victory and had declined the US Consulate invitation for visa re-interview in September 2025, citing the date’s historical significance as the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.
