The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has categorically denied reports circulating that it has scheduled the 2027 general elections.
In a statement released today, 2nd January 2026, and signed by Mr.
Adedayo Oketola, Chief Press Secretary/Media Adviser to the INEC Chairman, the commission described the reports as false and misleading.
It emphasized that no timetable or schedule has been issued for the 2027 polls.
INEC underscored its commitment to operating strictly within the law, citing Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, which mandates the commission to publish a notice of election not later than 360 days before the date fixed for a general election.
The commission states that any timetable released outside the legally prescribed window cannot be considered authentic.
The commission assures Nigerians that the official timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general election will be released in due course.
This will be done in strict adherence to the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the Electoral Act 2022. INEC added that upon completion of the timetable, it will be communicated through its official and verified channels.
The commission urges the public and the media to disregard the fake reports and rely solely on information from INEC’s official platforms.
