The Lagos State Building Control Agency, LASBCA, sealed a construction site and issued a 72-hour ultimatum to another property within the Lekki-Ikoyi corridor for alleged unauthorized development.
The agency emphasized that compliance with building regulations is crucial to preventing the proliferation of illegal structures and ensuring the safety and orderly growth of Lagos.
The enforcement operation occurred on Thursday, when LASBCA officials sealed a building under construction at Femi Okunnu Road, Alexander Avenue, after the developers allegedly failed to obtain the required permits.
The agency issued a statement on X, confirming that QMB Mart had been given a 72-hour ultimatum to dismantle all illegal structures erected along Coastal Road and beneath a powerline.
Dr. Olajide Abiodun, Special Adviser to the Governor on E-GIS and Urban Development, clarified that the affected area was originally intended as a parking area but had been converted for commercial purposes without obtaining government approval.
Abiodun pointed out that the site’s occupants purportedly converted the location into a commercial hub, constructing a laundromat, clubhouse, and eatery without obtaining requisite authorisation.
He stressed that development in Lagos must comply with established regulations, highlighting that unapproved structures or unauthorized changes to government-allocated spaces are considered illegal. The state’s commitment to upholding its master plan was reiterated.
LASBCA’s General Manager, Gbaye Florence, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to continuous monitoring and enforcement across all development zones in the state.
It is our duty to ensure that all buildings in Lagos meet safety standards and comply with global best practices.
Anyone who erects structures without due approval will be identified, marked, and subjected to appropriate enforcement action,” she said.
LASBCA emphasized that its statewide enforcement drive will continue as part of efforts to eliminate illegal developments and promote a safer, better-planned Lagos.
