Benin Republic’s military has reported the arrest of approximately a dozen soldiers following a thwarted coup attempt, including the masterminds behind the operation.
According to reports, thirteen individuals have been detained.
With the exception of one, all of the suspects are currently serving members of the military, and the remaining detainee is a former member of the armed forces.
KIKIS BLOG has reported that several arrests have been made following an address on Benin’s national television by a group of military officers, in which they declared the removal of President Patrice Talon and the dissolution of all state institutions on Sunday morning. The officers, who identified themselves as the Military Committee for Refoundation, asserted that they had assumed power.
The presidency has assured that President Talon is safe and that loyalist forces are in the process of restoring order.
The incident has been attributed to a small group with limited influence.
“This is a small group of people who only control the television.
The regular army is regaining control. The city and the country are completely secure,” the presidency stated.
