PDP Loses Key Lawmaker in Abia
The Peoples Democratic Party has been reduced to two members in the Abia State House of Assembly following the defection of Hon. Erondu Uchenna Erondu Jnr, representing Obingwa West State Constituency, to the All Progressives Congress.
At the inauguration of the Assembly, the Peoples Democratic Party held a majority of 13 seats. With the latest defection, the party now retains only Chief Solomon Akpulonu (Obingwa East) and Chief Mandela Obasi (Ohafia North).
Formal Reception into APC
Erondu, who chairs the House Committee on Public Service Matters, was formally received into the APC in Nenu, Obingwa Local Government Area. The event was attended by former Deputy Governor of Abia State, Dr. Chris Akomas, party leaders, and supporters.
He defected alongside former Obingwa Council Chairman, Chief George Ubani; Mr. Chikezirim Monday Orji; and over 5,000 supporters, in what APC stakeholders described as a significant boost for the party in Abia State.
Reasons for Defection
Speaking at the event, Erondu said his move to the APC would enable him to attract greater development to Obingwa Council, Abia South zone, and the state at large.
“If I could accomplish what I did while in the PDP, I assure our people that with the APC platform, we will do even more,” he said.
He also declared support for the re-election of President Bola Tinubu in 2027, describing his reform policies as bold and necessary for Nigeria’s long-term growth.
“The re-election of President Tinubu in 2027 is not negotiable,” he added.
Behind-the-Scenes Engagements
Media aide to the lawmaker, George Egejuru, said the defection followed sustained engagement by senior APC figures, including Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu, former Imo governorship candidate Uche Nwosu, and federal lawmaker representing Ukwa Federal Constituency, Chief Chris Nkwonta.
In his remarks, Dr. Chris Akomas described Erondu as a valuable political asset and noted that he was an early founding member of the APC in Abia, having served as the party’s first Administrative Secretary in the state alongside its pioneer National Vice Chairman (South East), Dr. Nyerere Anyim.
Akomas expressed confidence that Erondu’s return would strengthen the APC’s structure in Abia ahead of the 2027 general elections.
