High-Level Meeting at Defence Headquarters, Abuja
Nigeria and the United Kingdom have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral defence cooperation as part of efforts to address evolving national and regional security challenges.
The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa Oluyede, on February 6, 2026, received the United Kingdom High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr Richard Montgomery, at Defence Headquarters in Abuja.
The meeting focused on strengthening operational and strategic collaboration between the Armed Forces of Nigeria and the United Kingdom in response to dynamic regional and global security threats.
Focus on Training and Capacity Development
General Oluyede expressed appreciation for the UK’s continued partnership with the Armed Forces of Nigeria, particularly in the areas of Professional Military Education, specialised training, and operational capacity development.
According to a statement issued by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the CDS reaffirmed the Armed Forces’ commitment to continuous professional development. He emphasized the need to expand mutually beneficial bilateral defence relations, especially in emerging security domains and intelligence support.
He noted that sustained collaboration remains critical to Nigeria’s broader objectives of enhancing national security and contributing to regional stability.
UK Reaffirms Commitment to Strategic Partnership
In his remarks, Dr Richard Montgomery congratulated the CDS on his distinguished service and acknowledged the progress recorded in defence cooperation between both countries.
He reiterated the UK’s commitment to strengthening defence ties with Nigeria, highlighting the shared responsibility of both nations in promoting regional stability, addressing emerging threats, and building sustainable military capacity.
The UK envoy described the partnership as forward-looking and mutually beneficial.
