Gernot Rohr, head coach of the Benin Republic national football team, has raised concerns with FIFA and CAF regarding the delay in enforcing a potential three-point deduction against South Africa that could impact Group C standings.
Rohr, a former Super Eagles technical adviser, has requested decisive action against South Africa for fielding an ineligible player, Teboho Mokoena, in their 2-0 World Cup qualifier win over Lesotho in March.
FIFA and CAF have yet to issue an official decision, leaving other Group C teams, including Nigeria, Benin Republic and Rwanda, uncertain about their World Cup qualification prospects.
In an interview with Mega Sports, Rohr remarked after Benin’s recent 1-0 triumph over Zimbabwe: “South Africa secured a win against Lesotho? Okay, but the match that counts is the first leg, where they will be required to surrender the three points.”
It is evident. The rules governing the situation are straightforward and well-established. We fail to understand why FIFA and CAF have yet to impose point deductions.
It is not a normal situation. We lack clarity on our standing. We currently have 11 points after this match today.
South Africa must drop three points, after which our opponent’s lead will be cut to two points. What are they waiting for? I do not know. It is perplexing.
