UN Secretary-General António Guterres has stressed that any end to the ongoing war in Ukraine must fully align with international law. Speaking at the Reuters NEXT conference in New York on Wednesday, Guterres acknowledged that a peaceful resolution remains distant.
He noted that despite efforts by global powers, including the United States—which has been actively working to help broker an end to the conflict—the path to a lasting settlement is still unclear. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 ignited the most significant clash between Moscow and Western nations since the Cold War.
Turning to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Guterres praised the United States for helping remove obstacles that hindered the delivery of urgent aid to civilians. He added that there are strong indications that war crimes may have been committed during the clashes between Israel and Hamas.
Guterres also addressed recent U.S. strikes on vessels near Venezuela, stating that such actions appear inconsistent with international law.
